Maldives - Pirated Software Market.

Software piracy is one of the biggest challenges faced by software developers. Who wouldn't want to buy the pirated version when it costs less than 10% of the price.

In Maldives 90% of the people use pirated versions of Windows and other software. It is traded openly because there is no copyright law in the Maldives. It is very sad to write here that large companies and institutions also use pirated software. I have seen pirated software (Microsoft Windows XP, Adobe , Macromedia, etc.) in use by a private education institution in Maldives. I asked a lecturer about it and he said "Can you prove it?". What comes into your mind? I seriously doubt that these lecturers are professional. Anybody with little IT knowledge can distinguish between genuine windows and pirated windows.

Original software is not available in Maldives for purchasing(afaik). So a better alternative would be to switch to a free OS such as Linux. And there are numerous free software for download. Open Office is a substitute for Microsoft Office package, and its free!

You can get freeware software at http://freewarefiles.com/

Enjoy!

Well, true. But for a country like Maldives, its not possible to buy software and use. Simply the costs will be too high. How much do you think a company who owns maybe 50 to 60 machines and other services will cost? Its simply not possible for most Maldivian companies to bare this cost. I work in a company where we pay millions of USD for software license every year. If i can help it I would try my best to bring them down. Yeah, as you mentioned best choice is the open source softwares. From the desktop to servers. That is you if ever have to pay. This is a good question for the government to ask and wonder about.

Maldives is not a rich country. If they are forced to accept only the "original" most of the them would not be able to buy them. The materialistic societies of the west doesnot care about the rest. The west are rich so they can impose these laws within their societies because they can buy them, but those who are poor should not be charged with the same price because they cant bear them and because they have a right to benefit and learn from these just like the west.Did you ever wondered how life would be for the homeless or those living in iraq or palestine. In my opinion everything should be viewed in every direction
